The Cathedral of St. Paul has made a concerted effort to reach out to those in our immediate neighborhood in the spirit of service and love. With this in mind, we have recently partnered with Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary, and assist the students, teachers and families as best we can.

The Cathedral was previously partnered with the First grade class of Emerson-Gridley Elementary from 2015 - 2017. The Cathedral supplied the First-graders with necessities for school such as uniform shirts, flash cards, and crayons as well as some fun items for their summer breaks. The Cathedral was also able to provide funding to help send students from Emerson-Gridley to a special concert by the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra in November of 2015 and 2016. A number of Cathedral members volunteered as tutors during the school day and we also implemented a new music program headed up by our Canon Musician, Sharon Downey, during the after-school care that is provided.

With this new school partnership we will be supporting all six Kindergarten classes, helping to supply a school Caring Closet, helping to provide books for the library, as well as assisting in many other ways.

Upon retirement, I began to search for meaningful volunteer activities. The Cathedral's mission offered me the volunteer activities I desired. Through my volunteer work at the Cathedral I have formed a new circle of friends and enjoyed meaningful outreach work. Among the most satisfying is mentoring students at Pfeiffer-Burleigh Elementary. I work with kindergartners who are developing their reading skills. Over the course of the year, students have progressed from learning letters and sounds to reading basic sentences. I cannot explain how exciting it is to see them grow and learn. The kids and I also have a lot of laughs along the way. I am thankful that St. Paul’s has directed me to this great experience in my retirement.
