WORSHIP

Worship, which we practice in the cathedral style, is central to the Cathedral of St. Paul. We take great care to give God our best using traditional ceremony, the finest music, serious prayer, and thoughtful biblical preaching. Our worship uses the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, and Sunday services include both the traditional (Rite I) and contemporary (Rite II) form of the Eucharist, or communion. All those who have been baptized in any church, including infants, may receive Holy Communion.

Our annual candlelight service of Christmas readings and music is well known in the Erie community.  We join together in appreciation for the beauty and power of the Christmas story and the hope it inspires for peace on earth and good will among all.

The Cathedral held nonpartisan services of prayer in 2016 before the Presidential Election and in 2018 before the Mid-term Elections. Traditional prayers for the nation and the election were offered with sung Evensong. These services welcomed all  to a sacred space with a message of reconciliation and civility.

We have some fun on the last Sunday before Lent each year. The burial of the Alleluia egg, burning of palms, a Mardi gras procession and pancake races make for a memorable day!

In 2017, the Cathedral held a celebration of the life and music of Harry T. Burleigh with the release of the Cathedral Choir's CD, "Hold On! Keep Your Hand on the Plow," a recording of the spirituals of Harry T. Burleigh.

For almost 20 years, the Cathedral has welcomed all Erie pets (and their people) to the Blessing of Animals each year near St. Francis' feast day.

The Cathedral takes great care to provide outstanding liturgy and music for all seasons of the church year. Over the years, the congregation and the wider Erie community have come to depend on the Cathedral for the best of Episcopal tradition, preaching and music.
